Enchanted Tea
There is an ancient belief that if you sit under a pine tree on Christmas Day, you will hear angels singing. I’ve never tested this theory but it’s lovely to think of something so serene and majestic that is connected to the Christmas season. I have a similar experience when I brew a pot of tea, the right tea can lift the spirit to calm and inspire the soul. Christmas time is very special everywhere but particularly in the tea community as we have special blends dedicated specifically to celebrate the Christmas season. I associate the belief of angels singing under a pine tree to the act of blending tea to create a unique Christmastime blend, as both require a harmonic blend of multiple attributes to elevate the spirit. I write about teas but I also blend teas every day and I’ve recently been inspired to write about the different blends that I have created and enjoyed over the years. Earlier this month, I visited a tea house in Burlingame, Leland Tea Company, and was inspired by their Holiday Blend black tea. The tea had the right amount of Christmas spice and just a hint of natural sweetness that I bought a batch to take home and brew on my own. Upon inquiring on the blend, I discovered it’s a blend of two teas that are sold during the year at the tea house. I took this as a “divine nudge” pointing me to all of the teas I blend each morning. So, without further ado, I will unwrap this early Christmas present with one of my favorite Christmas teas, the Holiday Blend.
Christmas time isn’t just about the decorations and presents you see all around, it’s so much more. The Christmas season has a distinct smell of spices and peppermint. The holiday tea smells of Christmas, it’s like a cup of Christmas with the aromas of cinnamon, cloves and peppermint all dancing in the air. By themselves, each spice is delightful BUT blended together, they create a harmony of scents that sing to the soul, I think the singing angels would concur.
One of the words for Christmas time is warmth, this tea will bring warmth to you in every sense of the word. The color of the tea mirrors the spices of cinnamon, cloves and peppermint and you end up with a beautiful shade of seasonal auburn in your cup. The cinnamon in the tea brings a natural sweetness to the blend and compliments the more bold flavors of cloves and peppermint. You may even see a little sugar plum fairy flying around your cup - it’s divinely sweet. I would recommend a cream with this blend, the cream brings out the bold flavors and provides a hint of savory to the tea.
If you want to hear angels singing, don’t run under a pine tree, brew a cup of Christmas and head for the holiday blend tea. After a few sips, wait and listen for the sweet song in your heart to come forth and listen to the stirrings of your spirit whispering a chorus of hallelujah to your tea time.
Tea has a divine spirit and language of its own, it speaks to you when you crave a particular tea at any given moment. Follow your tea spirit…
