Many moons ago, I serendipitously stumbled upon a quaint little tea room located in San Francisco while I was out exploring one day. The owner was warm and friendly, he was eating lasagna at the time and generously extended a piece to me. As I was basking in the glow of his generosity, I noticed the decor of his tea room - hand painted divas from the 1920’s era. All of these hand painted damsels were dressed in lavish coats and adorned with jewels and furs from that era. The tea room contained several tables and a small kitchen with tins of loose leaf tea to open and smell located in the front. To go with the theme of the tea room, many of the teas were also named after historic divas which fit in perfectly with the design and ambiance of the tea room. The owner, a former professional chef, who has a passion for tea and food, created his own tea blends but also his own unique menu for high tea. Little did I know that this would soon become one of my frequent haunts over the years - one of my “happy place” venues. That was over fifteen years ago and Leland Tea Company has since moved to Burlingame. However, they are worth the effort to visit Burlingame as they still host one of the best High Tea time’s around.
Whenever I go, I always order a Tea Lunch that contains a Keto-friendly salad and I add a scoop of Tuna/salmon salad. The lunch comes with a bottomless pot of tea which can be served hot or cold - switch if you prefer. The tea menu has an extensive list of teas to choose from, over 20 different varieties. Here are some of my all time favorites:
Coco Blanc: white tea with coconut and pineapple flavors
Kookiedoodle: black tea with hazelnut and cinnamon
It’s a Wonderful Life: black tea with chai
Pear Caramel: black tea with pear and caramel flavors
The Seven Year Fig: black tea with sweet notes of fig flavors
The next time you are in the San Francisco area, please venture out to Burlingame and visit Leland Tea Company. The visit is sure to bring a smile to your face and warmth to your heart as you step back in time to an era of lavish tea and savory treats to entice your palate.
