About 4 years ago, I worked for a French owned company. One of the founders adored macarons and we would bring some in for his birthday, every year. It was always a special time that we all looked forward to, eating those dainty little sandwiches - two cookie pillows that sandwiched a sweet ganache filling. I enjoyed visiting the store in Hayes Valley where they would have over seventeen different flavors (passionfruit, hazelnut, coffee, chocolate, pistachio...just to name a few). Suffice to say, I’ve tried my fair share of macarons over the years but my all-time favorite is the coconut macaron. There is something so sweet yet earthy about the coconut flavor that really enhances this delicious treat. One day, curiosity got the best of me and I researched how this dessert came to be. It has an interesting history that dates all the way back to 16th century France where the recipe was created as an alternative to the almond paste version in Italy. Today, it’s just a lovely finger sandwich cookie that can be enjoyed any time of day. I typically enjoy them with tea, of course. Since transitioning to my low carb lifestyle, I don’t treat myself to many coconut macarons these days but I have come across the next best thing, a sweet tea that emulates the flavor of my beloved cookie indulgence. Drum roll please…let me introduce you to the Coconut Macaron Dessert Tea by Plum Deluxe. I stumbled upon this black tea while browsing for a tea to appease my aching sweet tooth craving (it may be the only tooth I’m left with in old age but that’s another story for another day). A warm cup of this tea is like biting into a coconut macaron right out of the oven.
Ah! The smell, just opening the tea pouch for this tea is a pleasure. Once opened, the tea creates a soft aromatic breeze of coconuts and almonds that tantalize the nose. Much like being in the macaron bakery where you can just smell the warm almond flour cookie cakes just baking away. The scent of coconuts and almonds are followed by the happy scent of sweet sugared ganache being mixed in the background. At this point, you are merely standing in the doorway to the macaron bakery...now, step closer to the counter.
The tea brews into a beautiful display of gold and auburn hues that melt into the teacup. The heat only amplifies the aromas of coconut and almonds coming from the leaves. It feels like you’re baking your own personal coconut macaron right before your eyes. Coconut macarons don’t last long in my possession, once I have one in-hand, I MUST take a bite. Sipping this tea, like taking your first bite of a coconut macaron, is a sweet treat. The first flavor to greet your palate is coconut, followed by the almond and sugar. The flavors mirror biting into a macaron, once your teeth sink into the little cake and then the ganache filling - absolute nirvana. I don’t typically add sugar to this tea but a bit of cream does give it some fluff, it lightens the shade of the tea and helps bring out more of the coconut flavor.
The next time you are in the mood for a coconut macaron, brew a cup of this tea before you head to your nearest macaron bakery. If you close your eyes, you can see yourself biting into a scrumptious macaron with every sip. Go slow, take your time in the bakery, there are PLENTY of macarons in here.
Tea can brighten the dreariest day, it brings comfort and warmth to the body and soul. Which tea will brighten your spirit today?
